DaVinci Partial Nephrectomy

May 22, 2012

Thanks to advanced imaging technologies, we are identifying tumors of the kidney earlier and earlier all the time. Whereas many doctors remove the entire kidney for a small tumor, advanced robotic surgery now allows us to remove just the part of the kidney with a malignancy, leaving the rest of the normal kidney behind.  It makes perfect sense, that the more blood-filtering ability your body has, the better.  In fact, several studies now show that a partial, rather than a total, nephrectomy not only leads to better overall survival, but cancer-specific survival also matches that of a total nephrectomy.
