Vacuum Erection Device
Description
A vacuum constriction device (VCD), also known as a “penis pump,” is an external pump that men use to achieve and maintain erections. The device contains an acrylic cylinder with a pump that is attached to the end of the penis which helps men become erect. A constriction ring or cylinder is placed at the other end, which is used to maintain the erection.
- Studies suggest that 50%-80% have been satisfied with VCDs as a form of erectile dysfunction treatment.
- VCDs should not be used by men who have a significant congenital bleeding disorder or anything that predisposes them to priapism (a prolonged, sometimes painful erection lasting over several hours).
- A black and blue mark or small area of bruising may appear on the penis, although it is usually painless and resolves itself in a few days.
