Convenient Appointments, Same-Day Vasectomies
Make an appointment that works for your schedule. Fridays are the most popular—you’ll be recovered and back at work on Monday. We can also perform the procedure same day as the consultation.

Have a Gas: No Pain, No Stress, No Added Cost
Along with spray-on topical anesthetic, we offer an optional fast acting inhalable solution. The gas has a calming effect, so the procedure passes by without concern. This is available to all vasectomy patients at no additional cost upon request.

Worth the Trip
Patients travel hundreds of miles (or more) to see Dr. Shaw in Austin for a vasectomy. You wouldn’t put your most precious possessions in the hands of just anyone, and that’s never been more true than when considering your vasectomy doctor.

Vasectomies Aren’t Just for Him
There is no “we” in vasectomy, but there should be. Wives love vasectomies almost as much as their husbands. As a far less invasive alternative to tubal ligation, they offer peace of mind for the whole couple. Just listen to this mom who wrote about her vasectomy experience at Austin Urology Institute.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Vasectomies

You wouldn’t get a vasectomy if you were the type who likes surprises. So here is the rundown on how we perform vasectomies in our Austin office.

The
Background

About 500,000 vasectomies are performed in the US annually, and the numbers are growing. Many men are considering vasectomies as an alternative to the invasive procedure their wives might otherwise undergo, or take lifelong birth control when no longer needed. Moreover, sexual function is unchanged after a vasectomy.

Most people have a minimal out of pocket or copay as the vasectomy is a covered procedure. For those who pay cash, our rates are the lowest available.

The vast majority of vasectomies are performed in the office. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes. Fridays are most popular for minimizing time off from work. Most of our patients opt to take a full or half day off on Friday, recover over the weekend, and return to work on Monday.

Before
The Procedure

  • We give you the choice to take a mild sedative prior to the procedure. At your request, we will gladly send a prescription to your pharmacy for a mild anti-anxiety tablet to be taken 30 minutes prior to the vasectomy. If you choose this option, please have a driver with you to take you home.
  • We ask that you shave the scrotal hair the day prior to the procedure and purchase jockey or similar supportive (bike-short type) briefs to wear the week following the vasectomy.

The
Vasectomy

  • We start by jet-spraying (no needle!) a small amount of numbing medication into a dime-sized area on the scrotum so you don’t feel a thing.
  • We then make a small incision in the scrotum, about the length of this line —— . Next, we tie off the vas deferens, removing a segment in between, along with heat-sealing the ends.
  • This provides 3 levels of protection from sperm getting from one side to the other. The small incision is then closed with a stitch that disappears in 10 days. Within 6 weeks, the incision is typically no longer visible.

Afterwards

  • Plan a relaxing few days after the vasectomy. Refrain from sports, including biking, running, weight lifting, bull riding, and sliding down stairs, for at least one week. More vigorous sports involving the lower extremities can be restarted in two weeks.
  • You can shower the day after the procedure, but no swimming for at least two weeks.
  • Pain medications (non-narcotic) and an ice pack are provided to take one tablet daily for a few days.
  • You can resume intercourse about a week after the procedure with protection. After approximately 30 ejaculations, we will have you perform an at-home sperm test to make sure that you have ‘cleaned the pipes’.
  • We are proud to offer SpermCheck, a convenient at-home test to determine the success of your vasectomy. This simple, accurate test can be done at 90 days and then the following week after the procedure, in the privacy of your home, without the need to bring a sample to the lab or office. We will follow up with you via email to ensure both tests are negative.
