Water is essential for the healthy functioning of the body. Almost all of the body’s major systems depend on water to operate and without it they would break down. Water makes up 60% of the body’s total weight and 90% of the brain’s weight.
It is extremely important to drink enough water to support your body’s needs. Every day, you lose water through your breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements, which is why it’s vital to continue to take in water continuously over the course of the day. For women 2.7 liters is optimal, and men should aim for 3.7 liters of water a day.
Here are just a few of the roles that water plays in the body:
-Regulates body temperature
-Moistens tissues in the eyes, nose and mouth
-Protects body organs and tissues
-Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells
-Lubricates joints
-Lessens burden on the kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products
-Helps dissolve minerals and nutrients to make them accessible to your body
