Austin and its surrounding cities (Georgetown, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Bastrop, and San Marcos) are at higher risk of making stones mostly due to the hot weather. During the summer, people enjoy spending time outside. Austin, in particular is a very active city and many people do not hydrate as well as they should. The lower water intake combined with physical activity in the hot weather is a big risk factor for stone formation.
The American Urology Association suggests that due to global warming many places that use to not have hot weather will start to develop hot weather causing these places to have increased kidney stone cases. This concept is called the “stone belt”. The belt right now is the southern United States but the belt or geographic line is moving north as global warming is becoming more prevalent.
