Let’s Talk Testosterone
Testosterone levels in men tend to increase during their late teens and early twenties, peaking in their late twenties. After that, they may gradually decrease by about 1% per year, but this can vary on a case by case basis.
The normal range for adult males is usually between 300 and 1,000 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), with an average of around 600 ng/dL. But keep in mind that different labs may use slightly different ranges.
One study found in the Journal of Urology gave some specific numbers for total testosterone levels by age group. According to that study, guys in their early twenties usually have total testosterone levels between 409 and 558 ng/dL. After that, the numbers gradually decline as guys get older.
Ages broken down below:
20-24 years old: 409-558 ng/dL
25-29 years old: 413-575 ng/dL
30-34 years old: 359-498 ng/dL
35-39 years old: 352-478 ng/dL
40-44 years old: 350-473 ng/dL
45-49 years old: 257-397 ng/dL
50-54 years old: 252-376 ng/dL
55-59 years old: 218-318 ng/dL
So, let’s say you get your testosterone checked and your results come back as “normal.” This doesn’t mean they are necessarily normal for you and your age bracket. It’s worth noting that low testosterone levels can cause problems for men. If you’re feeling low energy, struggling to lose weight and build muscle, and/or struggling with a sudden drop in your sex drive, low T may be the culprit! In that case you can look at treatment options, such as Clomid for low testosterone.
