All About Education!

September 3, 2024

My name is Alex Hughes, and I’m the lead nurse practitioner at Austin Urology Institute. Recently, I had the privilege of attending the AUA Fundamentals in Urology 2024 that was held at the Cleveland Clinic, attracting a diverse audience.  Dr. Koushik Shaw, our lead physician, strongly encouraged this, reflecting his deep commitment to our ongoing education.

This experience highlighted Dr. Shaw’s mission statement ensuring we stay at the forefront of advanced urological procedures and care techniques. During the training, I gained valuable insights into advanced procedures such as ultrasound-guided interventions, catheter management, and endoscopic techniques. These skills are critical for providing top-notch care to our patients and are a direct reflection of the importance Dr. Shaw places on continuous learning.

Dr. Shaw’s dedication to our professional development means we’re constantly expanding our skill set, staying updated with the latest advancements, and ensuring that our patients receive the best care possible. The emphasis on education within our practice not only benefits us as healthcare providers but, more importantly, it enhances the quality of care we deliver to our patients every day.

The Cleveland Clinic, founded in 1921, has a rich history of innovation and excellence in healthcare. It’s known globally as a leader in medical research, education, and patient care. Attending a course here, surrounded by top minds in urology—about 80% of whom were urologists (interns, PGY1, PGY2) and the remainder APPs, NPs, and PAs—was an unparalleled experience.

The course provided a mix of hands-on training and virtual didactic sessions, covering advanced procedures like ultrasound-guided interventions, catheter management, and endoscopy. These new skills are invaluable in delivering the highest level of care to our patients.

Dr. Shaw’s dedication to our professional growth is evident in his support for continued learning, ensuring that our team stays at the forefront of urological care. This commitment to education not only enhances our skills but also significantly benefits our patients.
