The life of sperm after vasectomies

June 13, 2014

What happens to sperm after a vasectomy?

After a vasectomy, the sperm continues to be produced, however they do not travel through the vas deferens due to the vasectomy. If the sperm have nowhere to go, they are broken down and absorbed by the body. In rare cases, sperm may collect in a cyst of the epididymis (a structure that is on top of the testicle, and transports sperm) or in the testicle itself.
