Increasing Vasectomy Rates in Texas

Following the historic Roe v. Wade decision at the national level, important discussions have been occurring regarding contraceptive options in people’s homes.

Condoms remain the only temporary form of birth control for men, with a failure rate of approximately 2-3% when used “perfectly.”  However, “typical” use failure rates can range from 10 to 20% over the course of a year, which can have significant repercussions – even more so in the current legal climate.

Dr. Koushik Shaw of the Austin Urology Institute has seen a significant increase in men contacting us to discuss vasectomy in the wake of recent state and national legislation. When considering options for permanent birth control, a vasectomy remains the only permanent option with a success rate over 99%. There are no sexual side effects when it comes to change in libido or erectile function. A vasectomy, although reversible, is considered permanent and men choosing this procedure have carefully considered their family planning.  Some men and families have opted for no children, while our record to date is a family who decided “8 is enough.”
