Are vasectomies reversible?

August 16, 2013

While a vasectomy is very quick and simple to do its reversal isn’t as easy. This is done as a surgery in the operating room, under general anesthesia using microscopic techniques.

While many insurance plans cover vasectomies, reversals are not, and the out of pocket cost can be quite up, costing you upwards of $20,000.

For all that money, you might expect guaranteed results. In fact, the success rate of vasectomy reversals vary and decrease over time after the original vasectomy. The longer you wait after your vasectomy, the less likely a reversal procedure will be effective.

We recommend that you look at vasectomy as a permanent procedure. Although it is easy to perform and inexpensive, it is still an important decision that you are making. The possibility of a reversal should not influence the decision to go through with your vasectomy in the first place.
