Austin Urology Institute to Offer Xiaflex for Peyronie’s Disease

January 10, 2014

Austin Urology Institute is proud to be amongst the first to offer Xiaflex as the first FDA approved treatment for men with Peyronie’s Disease. Peyronie’s disease is a painful condition involving curvature of the penis as a result of traumatic intercourse. The penis has two chambers, the corpus cavernosum, that fill with blood during an erection. The sheath or covering of the corpus cavernosum can be disrupted traumatically, usually during intercourse. Most people can heal this area normally. However in some people, there is abnormal healing, which causes scar. The penis then bends around the fixed point or scar, which is the essence of Peyronie’s disease. Think of blowing up a long thin balloon that has a piece of tape on one side. It will bend towards that side as you fill the balloon. That is the principle of the disease. Prior to Xiaflex, most men were encouraged to observe the disease. 30% would spontaneously get better, 30% stay the same, and 30% get worse. Many injectable and topical treatments have been tried, but none would have better results than the 1/3 rule just discussed. Surgery would be reserved for the worst cases, when the curvature would prevent intercourse.

Xiaflex is the first FDA approved therapy for curvature. In studies of patients, up to a 15 degree improvement in curvature was noted. Xiaaflex breaks down the collagen or scar in the plaque, causing an improvement in curvature.
